For nearly 360 years, the Royal Marines have provided unbroken service and are committed to protecting and promoting the Nation’s security, prosperity and reputation. Their bands are also renowned for their world class musical skills and we are very pleased that they are joining us once again for this special annual concert which marks the start of the festive season.
The Band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth is based at HMS Raleigh, the Royal Navy’s Initial Training Establishment. Being situated at HMS Raleigh enables the band to fully support Royal Naval training, providing music for the weekly passing out parade alongside an array of other functions. The band also regularly supports events at the home of Royal Navy Officer Training, Britannia Royal Navy College and at HMNB Devonport in Plymouth, for ship commissioning and home comings.
Over the previous few years, the band has been fortunate enough to perform around the world Including trips to Abu Dhabi, Dubai, New Delhi in India, Romania, Australia, New Zealand and Trinidad and Tobago. Closer to home, the band regularly appears alongside the massed bands of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines at national events, including Beating Retreat on Horse Guards parade, The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the Mountbatten Festival of Music.
More recently, the band has been involved in both the funerals of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, the Platinum Jubilee celebrations for HM Queen Elizabeth as well as visiting New York City in support of the Atlantic Future Forum 2022. They are particularly looking forward to returning to Torquay for their popular Christmas Spectacular concert.
It's a musical treat not to be missed!
Princess Theatre, Torquay
The Princess Theatre first opened its doors on Wednesday 7 June 1961. Top of the bill on the opening night were the late, great Tommy Cooper and the legendary Morecombe & Wise. In 1963 The Beatles appeared live on stage singing the then newly released single “She Loves You” causing some hysteria in the town!
The Princess Theatre is South Devon’s largest theatre with a seating capacity of 1,491. Big musical productions that have thrilled our audiences include Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Chicago, Starlight Express, Rocky Horror, Cats, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Icons of the stage and screen Sir Roger Moore, Elaine Page, Joan Collins and the beloved Joan Rivers, have also graced our stage. Comedians Jimmy Carr, Alan Carr and Dawn French have performed here too and chart toppers Mumford & Sons, Jamie Cullum and Ronan Keating have included the theatre on their UK tours.
