Rescued from the Liverpool docks as a child, Heathcliff is adopted by the Earnshaws and taken to live at Wuthering Heights. He finds a kindred spirit in Catherine Earnshaw and a fierce love ignites. When forced apart, a brutal chain of events is unleashed.
Shot through with music, dance, passion and hope, Emma Rice (Romantics Anonymous, Brief Encounter) transforms Emily Brontë’s masterpiece into a powerful and uniquely theatrical experience.
Lucy McCormick (Post Popular) leads the company of performers and musicians in this intoxicating revenge tragedy for our time.
“I am Heathcliff! Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.”
Adapted and directed by Emma Rice. Composer Ian Ross. Set and costume Vicki Mortimer. Sound and video Simon Baker. Lighting Jai Morjaria. Movement and Choreography Etta Murfitt.
Wildly imaginative, exhilarating piece of theatre- The Daily Mail
One is tempted to jump up and cheer at the sheer brilliance of what we’ve been watching- Stage Talk Magazine
Superbly cast, delivered with gusto and evincing the kind of rough-hewn yet fluid and economical theatrical invention (including live music, dancing, puppetry) that enhances the story’s dark, grim grip and locates pockets of welcome humour within it.- The Times

Vesta Tilley laid the foundation stone of what is now the Sunderland Empire on 29 September 1906 and took to the stage on 1 July 1907 to officially declare the theatre open. Masterminded by two of the contemporary heads of British theatre, Edward Moss and Oswald Stoll, the Sunderland Empire Theatre has undergone many changes since it opened but remains the North East’s premier entertainment venue.
