This week falls alongside Dear Evan Hansen gracing our stages so the young people will get the chance to see the show as well as hear from some of the production team working behind the scenes.

Work in Theatre Week (14-18 years)

The aim of this week is to inspire the next generation of theatre makers and artists to explore careers and get a further understanding of the pathways into theatre. We want to showcase the talent that can happen on our stages, behind the scenes and what goes into creating a show or running a theatre.

• Tuesday - Backstage Tour and Q&A from Playhouse technical team

• Wednesday - Special Effects Make up & Shadowing Front of House matinee

• Thursday - Dear Evan Hansen Technical Production workshop & Directing Workshop

Workshops will take place every day 10:30-16:00 with later finish on Wednesday and Saturday due to show.

Cost for the week: £225.00 (bursary places and payment plans are available please get in touch).

“This course gives a great idea about how many roles and jobs there are in the industry and how many pathways there are to do it. We don’t get to do this kind of stuff in school I can’t wait to sign up to do it again!”

“My favourite workshop was the make-up workshop & hearing about everyone’s jobs as we don’t get to do stuff like that in school.”

“I really loved shadowing different employees in the front of house as it builds my confidence in theatre and I got hands-on experience of what it was like to work for the Playhouse.”

This is a Creative Learning event. Tickets for Creative Learning events are non-transferable and non-refundable.

Please note, there is no wheelchair or lift access to these workshops. Please get in touch if you have any access requirements: edinburghcreative@theambassadors.com.

Although designed as a variety theatre, the Edinburgh Playhouse opened in 1929 as Scotland’s second largest cinema. It was hugely successful and remained so until the downturn in cinema attendance in the early 70s. When it closed in November 1973, the building was at risk of demolition, but following several years of public ‘save the Playhouse’ campaigns it was eventually saved. It reopened in 1980 as the fully functional theatre it was always intended to be. Since then, it has hosted some of the world's biggest music and stand-up comedy acts including, Elton John, The Who, Nick Cave, Kevin Bridges and Tim Minchin and international hit musicals such as The Phantom of the Opera, We Will Rock You, Wicked, Matilda and Disney’s The Lion King.
