Swan Lake is arguably the world’s most popular ballet, and a timeless tale. Prince Siegfried falls in love with Odette, Queen of the Swans, only to be tricked into betraying her by the wicked von Rothbart and his daughter Odile. The thrilling sight of a company of swans dancing in perfect harmony is one of the true delights of classical ballet.

A live orchestra performing Tchaikovsky’s splendid scores adds the finishing touch to these spectacular performances, a treat for ballet lovers and newcomers alike.

Following a hugely successful debut in 2024, Mergaliyev Classical Ballet returns to delight audiences with a company of international dancers brought together by Artistic Directors Yassaui and Sophie Mergaliyev.

Not originally intended to be a theatre, the buildings that comprise the Grand Opera House York officially opened in 1902 with Little Red Riding Hood starring Florrie Ford. Since then it has been owned by FJ Butterworth, the Shepherd of Shambles and the India Pru Co. Ltd who spent £4,000,000 restoring the theatre to its former glory in 1987.
