With a glorious history hosting stars of the century, Charlie Chaplin, Gracie Fields, Les Dawson and many more icons, The Palace delights audiences today with large scale musicals, plays, music and comedy acts. Creative Learning Tours of the theatre are a great way to explore the Grade II listed building and hear more about its amazing history, and what makes theatre work. The tour will be concluded with a Q&A with our Creative Learning tour guide, giving you some time to chat about your favourite stories from the day.

Tours will last approximately 1 hour 40 minutes. Meeting point for Tours is The Main Entrance. Please arrive 5 minutes before as late comers may not be admitted.

-Tour tickets must be booked in advance as tickets are not available on the door.

-This is a venue tour and not a performance. Tours do not include show ticket.

-Access to restricted areas of the building, including backstage, are subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed, as we are a working theatre.

The Palace Theatre of Varieties opened on Whit Monday 1891 and cost its owners the then colossal sum of £40,500. In the late 1970’s the Palace Theatre underwent a major refurbishment and re-opened in 1981 with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar and has since then retained its position as the premier provincial touring venue.
