Sunderland Empire
From the Yorkshire Dales to the city of Sunderland, Matthew Wolfenden is set to bring his boyish charm to this year’s pantomime spectacular, Jack and the Beanstalk, as loveable hero Jack.
Best known for his role long-running role as David Metcalfe in ITV’s Emmerdale, Matthew also won the seventh series of Dancing on Ice, as well as guest presenting on This Morning, Loose Women, Lorraine, Loose Men, and starring in The Real Full Monty. Most recently, he played Buddy in Elf The Musical (Dominion Theatre), with further stage credits including Aladdin (The Old Vic), Saturday Night Fever (National tour), Romeo and Juliet (Piccadilly Theatre) and more!
Matthew leads a magical cast, with panto favourites, North East Queen of Comedy, the fabulous Miss Rory (Boulevard) and the hilarious Tom Whalley.Alongside, stage stars Richard Meek (The Rocky Horror Show, Spamalot), Emma Crossley (I Should Be So Lucky, Jersey Boys), Gary Davis (Strictly Ballroom, Annie) and Millie Readshaw.
When a heinous henchman kidnaps a cow and a princess from the downtrodden town of Boggy Bottom, young Jack finds himself on an adventure that he thought only existed in story books!
Expect a wholesome hero, a punch-packing princess, a feisty fairy, a silly sibling, a witty widow, a slippery servant, a kind-hearted king... and a cow with some beef. Oh... and a very large magical plant, of course!
Join us for a fee-fi-fo-fabulously reimagined romp through a classic tale you thought you knew… with amazing 3D effects!

Sunderland Empire
Vesta Tilley laid the foundation stone of what is now the Sunderland Empire on 29 September 1906 and took to the stage on 1 July 1907 to officially declare the theatre open. Masterminded by two of the contemporary heads of British theatre, Edward Moss and Oswald Stoll, the Sunderland Empire Theatre has undergone many changes since it opened but remains the North East’s premier entertainment venue.
