This pantomime season, we're throwing open the theatre doors to welcome families for child-centred, interactive tours around the theatre: Fairytale Tours! Fairytale Tours are a great way to for little ones to learn about pantomime, act out their fairytales, explore the Grade II listed theatre, hear about its amazing history, learn more about how it all works, and take part in some family-friendly activities. We'll be taking part in a treasure hunt around the building, solving clues... and hopefully the show can go on! With the support of our glorious guides, you will tour the beautiful auditorium and have special access to restricted areas of the building. And… who knows if we'll bump into any friendly characters along the way....

You don’t need a ticket to the pantomime to attend! Simply book you and your family onto the tour. Costumes for tour guests are not necessary but absolutely encouraged!

Timings and meeting point information:

Family Tours will last approximately 1 hour. Please arrive 5 minutes before your tour time as late comers may not be admitted.

Meeting point for Tours is the Theatre Main Entrance. Doors will open at your tour time.

Originally The New Theatre, it opened on Boxing Day, 1912. It went through several iterations, being renamed once before becoming the Opera House in 1920. It's also been used for different functions; as a cinema in WW2, then a bingo hall before reopening as a theatre again in 1984. Since, it has hosted magnificent shows like Barnum and Phantom of the Opera.
